I'll be rebuilding this thing, they are pretty straight forward actually being of all steel construction and cross country ready.
As a secondary project I am testing to see the start to finish difficulty of this project because if the $$ return is at a value sufficient to offset the cost involved x the amount of bullshit I have to deal with then I will purchase more of them and sell to the general public.
The issue is that I will buy them from military surplus. The military in their odd way of doing things has rated this type of equipment as DEMIL Q.
DEMIL Q means there is paperwork involved and odd restrictions on who I can re-sell the item to.
Also .. North Carolina are a bunch of fucking assholes at the DMV and require title of ownership in a specific way that is , by itself, a special head ache.
So I will be tracking this from point of purchase to completed project.
Step one: Bid.
DONE.
Step two: Win bid.
DONE.
Step three: Submit paperwork for EUC. ( EUC = end use certification )
Submitted .... awaiting approval.
^^ Since this is my 1st DEMIL Q form there is a chance that it can take 30-45 days to go through the system. They run a check on the buyer, actual verification of address etc.. etc...
Once approved for the 1st one then subsequent EUC take less than 10 days.
Step four: Submit form for SF97
SF97 will ensure I can title/register the property in NC.
Not done yet.
Step five: SF97 and EUC in hand. Drive to Jar head base and get the trailer.
Not done.
Step six : rebuild ....
Not done.

Well, you sir are on the list, friends and family get one for cost plus 10%. ( if I decide to do more of them.)
As far as initial delivery goes, its @ Camp Lejeune. I am gonna drive the 100 miles and get it no big deal.
(No idea what it would cost to be shipped cross country.)
Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune are the only good things about NC in my opinion.

Great .. you're on the list ! ( Friends list = cost + 10%)
And I've looked for a good trailer for the past 2 years and invariably the trailer was either :
a. A cheap under fed Lowes knock off that had a rated capacity of "Lawn Mower"
b. Some homemade hillbilly special with used mobile home axels, Still asking $1000 for it.
c. Some solid gold motherfucker ... @ over $ 1800 or MORE and still with under sized 14" tires.
Anyway ....
Let me get through the 1st one to see where the price point can be.
I won this bid with a $170 offer. But with added fee's for getting ownership papers ( sf97) and so on I'm already up to $230.
This does not take into account the needed sand blasting, repainting and the change over from 24v to 12v.
It looks like I can do ONE for under $500. And for a highly mobile, heavy duty all steel trailer that's still a pretty good deal.

I was born in Lumberton N.C. (even know where that is?)
Lived in N.C. only from Jr.H through H.School.........Hated every moment of it! (expect when engaged in sex with the belle next door. Did I ever tell you about her? Dad had a Ford camper parked on the driveway which was way off the main road, in the woods. We used to meet up around midnight. I did strange things to here in that camper).

Well pardon me. Since GDP was planning on SELLING these and I and others had planned on BUYING, I assumed that question was directed to the BUYERS as well.
And, since GDP mentioned being able to haul twice its listed capacity as a general practice, I very nearly could haul a 2-ton elephant were I to want to.

One owns a cargo trailer to transport cargo.
I don't really know how to explain it any differently.
As for capacity, that is dictated mostly by the wheelbase of the prime mover, wheel base is a MORE important factor than engine power when selecting a trailer. ( debatable opinion)
This trailer will safely and effortlessly transport 1500 pounds over the roughest terrain that you can find. If the mover it is attached to can climb it or go through it then this trailer ( loaded properly) can follow and still maintain mobility.
The trailer CAN haul over 3500 pounds with good tires and a low speed / improved road surface. Not recommended for long hauls.
When one views a MILITARY trailer and its data plate of cargo tonnage numbers one must understand that these are OFFROAD cross country figures and not a value of its maximum improved road capability.
Civilian trailers have low ground clearance and are not usually suited for off road usage.

You have applied to purchase/receive surplus Department of Defense property.
This property is either on the U.S. Munitions List (MLI) or on the Commerce Control List (CCLI). MLI usually requires a State Department License prior to being exported. These items are usually identified as Demilitarization (DEMIL) Code B. CCLI may require a general or validated license from the Department of Commerce prior to export. These are typically “dual” use type items, in that they have both a military and civilian use and are usually identified as DEMIL Code Q.
It is the exporter’s responsibility to ensure the property is correctly classified and all appropriate licenses are obtained prior to exporting the property.
Exporting without the appropriate export license (an approved End-Use Certificate, DLA Form 1822 does not constitute a license to export) or assisting another to illegally export property is a serious criminal offense and could result in substantial fines and/or imprisonment.
Section III of the End Use Certificate, DLA Form 1822, you signed in order to purchase MLI/CCLI from DRMS outlines your responsibilities. Please take the time to read it carefully. Please note that you are required to inform subsequent purchasers of this property of the information contained in the End Use Certificate regarding the laws and regulations pertaining to the property; that records of resale should be available for review if requested; and that the Government expects you to cooperate with Government representatives to verify the existence and condition of MLI/CCLI.
The Office of Defense Trade Controls (DTC), U.S. Department of State, controls and provides guidance on the export and temporary import of defense articles and defense services covered by the U. S. Munitions List. These include final action on license applications for defense trade exports, defense trade compliance, enforcement and reporting. DTC also provides guidance on registration, applications status and export law compliance for defense export approvals. DTC administers and enforces the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) (22 C.F.R. Parts 120-130) and Arms Export Control Act (AECA) (22 U.S.C. 2778-2780). Their web-site address: www.pmddtc.state.gov provides exporters with information on company registration, licensing, compliance and also contains a reference library. The Bureau of Industry and Security, U.S. Department of Commerce, is responsible for counseling exporters, conducting export control seminars, and drafting and publishing changes to the Export Administration Regulations. It is also responsible for licensing and compliance actions relating to the special comprehensive license and for processing of license applications and commodity classifications. Their website: www.bis.doc.gov provides exporters with information on the Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security’s policies, regulations, exporter licensing requirements, compliance, and enforcement and also contains a key resources reference. Ok, I got my refund for the 1st one. I also got a letter from the Feds telling me all about my responsibility of buying Demil Q items.
This means 'probably' that when I submit the next paperwork packet it will zip trough fairly easy.
So today I bought two located @ Fort Bragg, only 40 minutes away, so this works well for me.
I'll update his after I get through the paperwork phase ... anywhere from 10 days to two months just like the last one.

Trailer # 1 is now on my property.
NEW Tires. ( ~ 98% tread remaining)
NEW paint. ( Literally can not find a scratch on it.)
NEW Railings and back gate.
NEW Surge brake system.
Its a bit heavy for the Jeep as it is 75% of the Jeeps recommended tow weight even when empty. But I drove it the moderately hilly trip of 56 miles at speeds up to 60MPH ( average about 50Mph) and it tracks straight as an arrow behind the Jeep, no wobble, no bounce.
First glance and cursory inspection says its in top shape. I'll know more when I pull the hubs and take a look at the wheel bearings.

Got it home today and needs loads more work than trailer #1.
But I have the proper technical manual that goes with the system and I've personally performed 10 or more services on my own military equipment so I have a good background in getting it all fixed up.
Its an older model than #1, has not been upgraded with the newest wheel brakes OR the surge brake system. <----- This does not make it any less capable than trailer #1.

So the Jeep is 10 years old.
We bought it two years ago from a used dealership. It had been babied by the previous owner/owners. And as such no major work was ever needed and no major services were ever done.
I put a lot of stress on the Jeep by pulling these heavy trailers and as such ... broke the Jeep. Just a bit !
The water pump took a nap and needed to be replaced ... and while in the midst of replacing it I encountered a nest of shitty little Gremlins.
Water pump turned into:
Water pump.
Thermostat.
PS pump.
PS Pulley.
Fan clutch.
V-belt.
Total Cost to move two trailers a total of 56 miles = ~ $450 in fuel and REPAIR parts.
Gotta love how a project turns into a money pit if one is not careful.
Not only that but now I can't tow with the jeep until I do an engine overhaul. ( Out of caution only )

Got a price point yet? We finally got our truck and now ize needs ta tow summin behine it
As usual I'm in a waiting game with paper work. This time its for an original NC title. But in the mean time I can discuss price.
1st .....
My good name is hella fucking important to me, and MY conscience is a compass that guides me regardless of the surroundings or possible easy paths. This means I will NOT sell a trailer that is mechanically unsafe to use. I will also NOT sell a 1500 pound trailer to some dude that pulls up in a Honda civic with a 1" receiver hitch on the back. If the people wishing to buy are morons I will simply direct them the fuck off my property.
These trailers are meant for the toughest possible conditions one can place a trailer in. They are all steel construction and can take a LOT of off road abuse.
I know this first hand, I've used them in woodland and desert environments world wide ( to include combat ) and only RARELY have I ever seen one not be able to complete a mission due to mechanical fault. I also have detailed knowledge of ALL mechanical surfaces on this specific trailer and I have a DEPOT level service manual to go by.
The Buyer must be aware that this trailer is 1400 plus pounds EMPTY... and a vehicle with a tow capacity of 2500 lbs ( like my Jeep ) will pull it but will not be happy about it.
Lastly .. these trailers are Lunette type and as such you MUST have a PINTLE hitch for your vehicle or you simply can NOT tow this trailer.
I have a Class III 2" receiver hitch and simple bought a pintle/ball combo to slide into it. ( $80 to $140 )
Ok..
An M101 (in original, unmodified state)
These trailers typically will have obvious signs of use. They will have an older bias type tire and will NOT have the new surge brake system.
They WILL be road worthy, they WILL be 12v converted and they be ready to work from the minute you hook up to it.
Price : $550
The M101a2 (or a3)
Newer upgraded model, has a surge brake system, typically is in like new shape, good fresh paint, great radial tires. 12v lighting system.
Price: $750 - $1000 ( depends on condition.)
The M116A2E1 pictured in this thread and sitting in my back yard shows ZERO signs of usage and has 95% or more tread remaining on NEW radial tires.
So occasionally I will get them in this condition .. but most likely they will not be as damn near perfect as this one.
I watched a few of these on Ebay and I'm selling them well below what other dudes are asking, also ... go to any trailer lot and hand them $500 - $800 and see what they direct you to .. most likely you will get a nice 4x8 trailer with 12" wheels that has a rated capacity of "haha". Don't believe me? Home depot and Lowes sell trailers ... and NONE of them are even close to the quality of an M101 trailer.
Anyway ...
I'm still waiting on the title papers ... and my offer stands to forum members .. i.e. I'll sell you a trailer for $100 under what I list for to the general public.
TopGrey
07-29-2010, 10:56 PM
Sounds good, and I agree with the absolute absurdity that most trailers are way over-priced and not good for much more than the occassional hauling of a mower, maybe even lumber. For the cost at Lowes or Home Depot you could have one made to spec, stronger, if you know a welder.
Anyway, I can haul it. We've a Ram 1500 with the hemi and the tow package and then an upgrade. We also have the transmission cooler system. It won't be like towing it with a Duece and a Half, but it'd get the job done fairly well.
I don't know though that I need such a trailer. I do have people who might, so I'll check around. Of course, if I find someone who needs one they would not know about the 100 buck forum member discount. That being said, is the price above with our without the member discount?

This trailer is designed to be towed by a 3/4 ton utility truck. So a full sized Ford/Dodge/Chevy should have no issues.
The prices quoted above are gonna be my asking prices when I list them on Craigs list and/or Ebay.

Yaaaa !!!
Got the Us property Titles on Saturday.
Now LAST step is to get them transferred to NC State titles.
94 days ... from purchase date to today, with another 10 to 30 to get an NC state title.
The only way I will continue to buy these is if I get at least $600 each for them. ( or 2x what I pay) The time/hassle is not worth anything less.
If you that expressed interest in the trailers are still interested send me a PM, otherwise they hit the auction block as soon as I have state papers.
PROJECT OVER: Not even close to being a viable money maker. Takes too much of MY TIME to get this organized. The only way to make money on this would be to buy in bulk, 10 at a time. No way .. nope.
Project closed as of JAN 10, 2011.
