Just posting on this topic is exherting more energy than is really worth as my opinion of his death leans in no particular direction.

But I will say this much; I was a child in the 80's. Specifically, I was 7 years old in 1982 when Thriller was released. The entire neighborhood was instantly enthralled in it. You couldn't walk past a car or streetcorner boombox without hearing Billie Jean or PYT, and for good reason: The music was incredible, fast-paced, harmonic, and crossed racial lines in a time when whites and blacks were still on shaky ground. You couldn't turn on MTV without seeing the 20-minute epitaph to George Romero confections and 50's wolf-man throwbacks, and we'd watch the whole thing without a blinking eye.

And then came the imitators....

People of all ages (and ethnicities) donning dripping Jheri curls, and zipper-filled, vinyl, knock-off MJ jackets. In rare cases, you might even find a rhinestone-encrusted glove on one hand.

Thriller set the mold for the entirity of mainstream music, and without it we wouldn't have a good 75 percent of the music, music videos, and cultural influences that we do today.

But that's just an album, not a man. The man made the album, concieved the ideas, wrote the lyrics, and performed the dance steps on stage and in the videos, but there was a line between man and song. That line was littered with criminal allegations and oddities that sparked media controversies that have yet to be rivaled.

Sadly, we as humans are simple creatures. Most of us don't have the capacity to distinguish between tangible and intangible, performer and album. This is the very foundation for the methods of the media. Four years ago, the media was on the edge of their seats, readying to crucify MJ over accusations of pedophelia. Today, the same media outlets are pining over the guy's death, and have nothing but praise for a man who just a few years ago was their prime target. To the media -and the masses, for that matter- Michael Jackson is a disfigured, playground-owning, pedophile, who just happened to have created a great playlist.

Fortunately, there are a few of us who maintain the ability to make this distinguishment between man and music, myself included.

I am grateful for the music that MJ provided the world. I still put Thriller on my top 5 albums of all time (top 2, actually). I still get chills when I watch the video. I still associate his songs with events in my life. But despite all of this, I know that the man behind all of that was just that; A man.

Death comes to all of us, regardless of our contributions to society, good or bad. And while I am grateful for the memories and the fact that, despite his death, I'll still be able to enjoy those memories and music, I honestly don't give a fuck one way or the other that he's dead.
