I am still trying to get back to my goal weight of 112, and I go to the gym every day to tone up. I had my weigh-in today, and while I lost 3lbs, my body fat went up.

Does anyone know if those body fat calculators that you grip with your thumb are accurate? I didn't think it was possible to lose weight but have your body fat go up.

Any BF measurement that gathers its readings based on impedance are basically worthless as a consistent measurement device.

Your fluid intake, salt intake and so on have an effect on that type of device and can give a measurement variable of 1-10% daily.

Well...as far as cheap and simple to use, it's your best bet. Though they are fairly inaccurate, their readings come pretty close given the right conditions.
Although if you have been going to the gym regularly and are actually 'toning up' and losing weight, you can be absolutely sure that your body is NOT adding more fat.
If you can get someone that knows how to use skinfold calipers, that would be the next most accurate test of body fat. But they are expensive, must be calibrated, and are usually found in the hands of people that providing a service for money---also expensive.

If you REALLY wanna know to the utmost accuracy. Get your residual lung volume measured. Then, find someone that has a calibrated hydrostatic weighing tank...which you'll find at most universities with an exercise science program. Perform the hydrostatic weighing test, plug in your value for residual lung volume into the equations, and botta-bing, you have your %fat to within around 1-2%.

Fun fact: You burn more fat by sitting on your ass, or walking, than during a very high intensity work out.

Lol, I wish! I bust my ass at the gym, and I see way more results than I ever did. My only issue is water. I hate water, and if I drank more of it, they say I would see way more results. I drink flavored water, and my trainer says it's horrible for me.

I guess my issue is basically me gaining muscle because not only do I work out at the gym, but I come home and do a few miles on the bike, and then an hour on the gazelle, and before I go to bed, I do sit ups, and push ups. They say not to worry about the numbers on the scale but rather how my clothes are fitting, and I just tried on a new size last night, and it fits! So..lol.

And the whole body fat analyzer thing they use.. I agree with cranium, salt.. I had an egg sandwich from blimpie that morning and I had them put salt and pepper..so that's probably it. I just didn't understand how gripping a machine tells me my body fat. *shruggs*

Source? That's like asking a mechanic his sources when he tells you your brakes need replacing.
It's kind of part of my job to know these things guy.

Perhaps I should specify a little. I could write a pretty in depth and scientifically boring blog about metabolism, basic energy systems, anaerobic/aerobic glycolysis, ATP output of the Kreb's cycle and electron transport chain, and lypolysis....but I just want to prove my point.

During bouts of exercise, the body's main energy source is almost exclusively from Carbohydrates (as glucose/glycogen). The body is terribly inefficient at breaking down fat (lypolysis) for energy---in fact it completely sucks at it. You ever hear of runners 'hitting the wall?' That happens when they've exhausted their glycogen stores and have to start metabolizing fat for energy. Runners 'carbo load' to avoid this issue.
An acronym we use in physiology to describe the relationship between whether fat is being broken down or carbs, is called RER. RER is basically a ratio between CO2 released and O2 consumed. For most people the value at rest is .70. Now, I could show the equation this value goes into and work through it, but just know that at .70, the body is utilizing fat as energy exclusively.
ERGO, you burn more fat at rest, than during exercise.

Do you do this EVERY DAY? I think your 'trainer' is functionally retarded. You could be getting a lot better results doing far far less.

Any other info needed, I can try to help.

Kill's weight loss clinic: Stop eating Twinkies, unglue ass from computer screen.

You think I'm bullshitting? That is literally the method that I've used and in the last 2 years went from a size 40 to a size 34 pant. 75 pounds lost from simply not eating shit and leaving the house.

Well, I fuck a lot. But that is (obviously) offset by the insane amounts of booze I consume, so it doesn't really count.

I sure do. I bust my ass every day. I have tons of exercise equipment at my house, and I get good use out of them.

My trainer is right in a way. The vitamin water is 50 calories a bottle and it does add up, where water is 0. But I also drink crystal light which is only 5 calories a cup.

Well it's great that you lost weight! My problem wasn't food, it was asthma medicine. Prednisone made me gain 20lbs in a matter of 3 months. And once that damn weight is on, it is HARD as hell to get off. Not to mention pregnancy.. that messed me up too.

I didn't know that you were in the medical field.

It might be good to remember that from the perspective of most people on the Internet, you're just some guy on the Internet.

I don't know if you have me on ignore still or not but . . . .yes it is possible. You need to make sure your food intake is proper. Meaning you need to have enough of it and several times a day. 5-6 small meals daily is preferred. For a woman your size you're going to want about 2 oz of protein per meal with either a carb or fruit (depending on type of day and body type) and you need to make sure you eat before you work out with that protein a carb and a fruit. Use good carbs like potatoes, rice, yams, oatmeal, radishes etc and fruits in the berry family that are high in antioxidants. Your body needs to know its going to get food when it needs it and its going to be the right types of food. If you don't eat enough and are exercising a lot (like you've stated you are) your body is going to try and store as much as that food as possible as fat so it can have a reserve for the energy it "might" need. If you want a good consult. . get the fuck away from your personal trainer who's most likely schooled in caloric intake and go talk to a body builder. Those guys know how the body reacts to foods better than any one. They'll change from a lean tone body to muscle massed bodies in a matter of a few months depending on the next competition.
